چکیده

In this production study on the endangered Tungusic language Even, we investigate the acoustic correlates of the tongue root contrast that participates in Even vowel harmony. We investigate F1, F2, F3, A1-A2 and durational differences between “advanced” and “retracted” vowels. We found that F1 was consistently increased for “retracted” vowels, and F2 and A1A2 were consistently decreased. For the Sebian dialect, F3 was lowered. Moreover, we found that some vowels exhibited durational differences that might be considered an enhancing feature of the tongue root contrast. The high vowels /i/ and /u/ of Sebian dialect had smaller F1, F2 and A1-A2 differences than the low vowels, suggesting that the tongue root contrast is less expressed for high vowels.

The Diachronic Consequences of the RTR Analysis of Tungusic Vowel Harmony

There is by now a well-established consensus that vowel harmony in Tungusic is based on a feature referencing tongue root (TR) position (Li 1996, Zhang 1996). The backdrop for this consensus is the increasingly accepted view that TR harmony is characteristic of the language families commonly grouped together as Altaic: Ko (to appear) for Mongolic; Kim (1993) and Ko (2010) for Korean; and Vaux (...

Viii. Speech Communication Academic and Research Staff A. Physiology of Speech Production: a Preliminary Study of Two Suggested Revisions of the Features Specifying Vowels

The feature 'tense' (as applied to vowels) has been widely discussed (cf. Chomsky and Halle,1 Jakobson and Halle, 2 and Stewart3), particularly with respect to its articulatory correlates and relationship to vowel duration. Motivated apparently by persistent questions about the articulatory correlates of 'tense' and certain acoustic considerations, Halle and Stevens4 have suggested a revision o...

An acoustic-articulatory study of bilingual vowel production: Advanced tongue root vowels in Twi and tense/lax vowels in Ghanaian English

This article investigates the acoustic and articulatory correlates of vowel contrasts in bilingual speakers. We analyse data from bilingual speakers of Twi (Akan) and Ghanaian English, with the aim of examining how the production of the advanced tongue root vowel contrast in Twi relates to the production of the tense/lax vowel contrast in Ghanaian English. These data are compared to tense/lax v...

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...

Acoustic aspects of vowel harmony in French

This paper examines acoustic aspects of vowel harmony (VH), understood as regressive vowel-tovowel assimilation, in two regional varieties of French in six speakers’ productions of 107 disyllabic word pairs. In each word pair, the word-initial vowel (V1) was phonemically either /e/ or /o/, and the word-final stressed vowel (V2) alternated between /e-E/, /ø-œ/, /o-O/ or /i-a/. Results are consis...
